An absolutely charming collection of 20 songs to engage Primary School children’s hearts and minds as they explore their musicality. Many of the pieces are relatively easy to perform or have simple ostinati to accompany a more difficult melody. Most of the pieces have lyrics. Some are quite challenging for young players and, if aiming for a ‘party piece’ performance, are best suited to an ensemble for melodic percussion, perhaps joined by the school choir.
The mp3 recordings provide an example of a possible (optimal) arrangement. All have a clear count-in to enable children to play along with the recording if desired, especially if the class has only learnt one or two of the ostinati, or the melody alone. The recordings of ‘Improvise a Brilliant Plan’, ‘Move to the Groove’, ‘Picking Up the Pieces’ and ‘Take Me Across the River’ have sections left ‘open’ in order to provide a solid scaffold for student improvisations. Rounds include: ‘Platypus’. ‘Alien’ ‘Kookaburra Bring the Morning’ and ‘Charlie’. Call and Response structure features in ‘Mary Got a Python Snake’, Einstein’s Waltz’, ‘Move to the Groove’ and ‘Platypus’. Some of the pieces have one-chord ukulele accompaniment, e.g. ‘Step Into the Sky’, ‘Picking Up the Pieces’ and ‘Now & Then’.
